Cell Adhesion: Separation of p120's Powers?

چکیده
The catenin p120 is involved in many processes, including cell-cell adhesion and cancer. Recent work explores whether p120 independently regulates two key binding partners, RhoGTPase and cadherin.

Exposing p120 Catenin's Most Intimate Affair
p120-catenin regulates cell-cell adhesion by controlling cell surface retention of cadherin. In this issue, Ishiyama et al. (2010) present the first crystal structure of p120 in complex with cadherin, revealing molecular details of the functional interface and providing sophisticated new tools for dissecting p120's role in cell-cell adhesion.
متن کاملp120-catenin controls contractility along the vertical axis of epithelial lateral membranes.
In vertebrate epithelia, p120-catenin (hereafter referred to as p120; also known as CTNND1) mediates E-cadherin stability and suppression of RhoA. Genetic ablation of p120 in various epithelial tissues typically causes striking alterations in tissue function and morphology. Although these effects could very well involve p120's activity towards Rho, ascertaining the impact of this relationship h...
متن کاملCorrigendum: p120-catenin prevents multinucleation through control of MKLP1-dependent RhoA activity during cytokinesis
Spatiotemporal activation of RhoA and actomyosin contraction underpins cellular adhesion and division. Loss of cell-cell adhesion and chromosomal instability are cardinal events that drive tumour progression. Here, we show that p120-catenin (p120) not only controls cell-cell adhesion, but also acts as a critical regulator of cytokinesis. We find that p120 regulates actomyosin contractility thro...
متن کاملp120, a p120-related protein (p100), and the cadherin/catenin complex
Cadherins and catenins play an important role in cell-cell adhesion. Two of the catenins, beta and gamma, are members of a group of proteins that contains a repeating amino acid motif originally described for the Drosophila segment polarity gene armadillo. Another member of this group is a 120-kD protein termed p120, originally identified as a substrate of the tyrosine kinase pp60src. In this p...
متن کاملp120 catenin associates with kinesin and facilitates the transport of cadherin–catenin complexes to intercellular junctions
p120 catenin (p120) is a component of adherens junctions and has been implicated in regulating cadherin-based cell adhesion as well as the activity of Rho small GTPases, but its exact roles in cell-cell adhesion are unclear. Using time-lapse imaging, we show that p120-GFP associates with vesicles and exhibits unidirectional movements along microtubules. Furthermore, p120 forms a complex with ki...
